When creating your own pages, you can include other Pages and Excerpts.

Including Pages and Excerpts maintains a live link between pages. If the original content is updated, anywhere that content is included, it will be updated as well.

By including other pages and excerpt you can quickly build content which is super-easy to keep up-to-date.

Regardless which editor you use, whenever creating documents, please follow

The good (and the bad) of Confluence Excerpts and Include-pages:

(tick) A page can include any number of Excerpts.

(minus) A page can contain only one Excerpt.

(tick) An Excerpt can be part of a page, or the whole page.

(tick) An Excerpt can be used in any Page, from any Space, as long as you have permission.

(tick) An Excerpts retains the original formatting, headers, tables, etc.

(tick) Headers are retained and will show in the table of content of the page where it is included.

(tick) An Excerpt can blends seamlessly into the page where included.

(minus) Include-pages do not blend seamlessly into the page where included. Especially STATUS LABELS and text around 🌄 images do not retains the original formatting.

Use Include-page for including simple content.
Use Excerpts for anything else.

How to use Excerpts

Creating and including Excerpts is a two step process.

Step 1 - Create

  1. The creator (yes, that can be you) makes part of a page available by using the Excerpt macro.

  2. The macro creates a panel on the page.

  3. The creator (again, that can be you) adds content in the panel.

  4. The creator (can be you) Publish the page.

Step 2 - Include

  1. After Publishing the page, the Excerpt is available for any user with permissions to the space where the page is published.

  2. To include an excerpt in your pages, use the Excerpt Include macro.

To include an Excerpt:

  1. Select the page where you want to include the excerpt.

  2. Click the Edit icon.

  3. Position your cursor where you want the content.

  4. Type /excerpt

  5. Select Excerpt Include from the popup

     

  6. Type the first letters of the Excerpt you wish to include.
    To include a page from another Confluence Space, prefix the page name with SPACEKEY and a colon.

  7. Select the Excerpt.

     

  8. Select Remove Surrounding Panel.

  9. Click the Refresh icon.

     

  10. Check the Preview and click Save.

  11. Click Publish.

To see your updated content in another page or tab, hit the Refresh icon in your browser.
If you have a table of content area on your page, it will be updated automatically.

Include-Page

You can include all content from a page by using the Include Page macro.

  1. Edit the page.

  2. Position your cursor where you want the content.

  3. Type /include.

  4. Select Include Page from the popup.

  5. Type the first letters of the Page you wish to include.
    To include a page from another Confluence Space, prefix the page name with SPACEKEY and a colon.

  6. Select the page and click the Refresh icon.

  7. Control the Preview and click Save.

  8. Click Publish.

To see your updated content in another page or tab, hit the Refresh icon in your browser.
If you have a table of content area on your page, it will be updated automatically.
